All About Woodpeckers

There are several species of woodpeckers that can be found in Tennessee. Some of the more common species include the downy woodpecker, the hairy woodpecker, the red-bellied woodpecker, the red-headed woodpecker, and the pileated woodpecker. These woodpeckers are known to inhabit various terrains such as forests, parks, gardens, swamps, and urban areas.

The downy woodpecker, a small bird with a body length of around 6 inches and a wingspan of about 9 inches, is equipped with black and white camouflage and a distinctive black and white striped head. Its primary mission is to defend its territory through drumming sounds.

The hairy woodpecker, slightly larger than the downy woodpecker, measuring in at a body length of around 9 inches and a wingspan of around 13 inches, is also black and white, but with a longer bill and a solid white stripe down the middle of its back. Like the downy woodpecker, the hairy woodpecker's primary mission is to defend its territory through drumming sounds.

The red-bellied woodpecker, a medium-sized bird with a body length of around 9 inches and a wingspan of around 13 inches, is equipped with a red cap and a reddish stripe on its belly, as well as black and white markings on its wings and tail. It is known for its distinctive calls, which sound like "churr-churr" and can be found in a variety of habitats.

The red-headed woodpecker, also medium-sized with a body length of around 9 inches and a wingspan of around 13 inches, is equipped with a bright red head, neck, and chest, as well as black and white markings on its wings and tail. It is known for its distinctive calls, which sound like "kleek-kleek" and can be found in a variety of habitats.

The pileated woodpecker, the largest woodpecker species found in Tennessee, with a body length of around 16 inches and a wingspan of around 24 inches, is equipped with a red crest on its head and black and white markings on its wings and tail. It is known for its loud, distinctive calls, which sound like "kuk-kuk-kuk" and can be found in a variety of habitats.

All of these woodpecker species can be found in Tennessee, although the distribution and abundance of each species can vary depending on the specific location within the state. Woodpeckers play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control insect populations and dispersing seeds of the trees and plants they feed on.
